Since April 2011 the construction and erection work on the noise protection walls along Vienna’s outer circular A21 has been progressing, concentrating especially on the section Steinhäusl. The noise protection measures for the communities of Altenlengbach and Eichgraben stretch over about four kilometers, resulting in approximately 32,000 square meters of noise protection wall.

In addition to the noise protection walls along the roadway verges, noise protection measures are also taken along the central reservation. In order to meet the special requirements for the later installation of noise protection walls measuring higher than 6 meters in the central reservation, a special certification was needed for a modified DELTA BLOC^® containment and noise protection system to be used for this project. Our licensing partner MABA Fertigteilindustrie GmbH attained this certification for the tested DB LSW-M system from the national authorities, and their bid for the project was accepted by the Asfinag.

Noise protection walls are positioned as closely as possible to the source of the noise (i.e. the vehicles), in order to maximize the noise reduction. The limited space along the central reservation together with installations and waste water piping as well as the enormous height of 6.50 meters presented a special challenge. The prefabricated parts weighing 12 tons were delivered on their sides, lifted and erected by crane and anchored in the special base constructions with stainless steel dowels. A total length of 1,200 meters of noise protection wall was installed in this manner in only six weeks. An excellent achievement! Short construction times reduce costs and increase road safety.
