The range of suitable safety barriers for locations in which roadworks are being undertaken is decisive for the safety of all road users – that of the personnel carrying out the construction work, as well as that of passing vehicles. Five different  protection levels, A, B, C, D and E have been defined for the safeguarding of road construction sites, in accordance with the stipulations laid down by German ZTV-SA (supplementary technical contractual conditions and guidelines regarding safeguarding at roadwork locations). For traffic featuring predominantly heavy-goods vehicles, systems with higher containment levels should be favoured.

Groups A and E are particularly critical as they involve the changing of travel lanes. Heavy-goods vehicles deviating from their respective travel lanes could result in serious consequences.
